After Raley's Closes, Where Will Elko Shop for the Hard-to-Find Groceries?

"We are known for our variety, and there are some products you would have to drive hours to get if you couldn't buy them here." Sam Quintero, a Raley's produce team leader, said that in a union news release after the company confirmed its Elko store would close.

The store at 2505 Mountain City Highway in Elko Junction has been open since 1987. Its scheduled last day is Dec. 8, which is about nine weeks from now. Milk, bread, and ground beef will be easy to find after that date. Variety is the harder part. When Raley's goes, Elko's specialty shopping stops happening under one roof. It spreads out over a handful of smaller stores, most of them on the older, downtown side of town, and some of what Raley's carried may not have a local replacement.

What Actually Leaves on Dec. 8

The losses are worth naming one by one, because each one points to a different replacement.

Raley's 2013 remodel brought in organic, natural, and gluten-free foods along with a fresh seafood cooler, according to the Elko Daily Free Press. That description is from 13 years ago, though. The newer and more telling detail comes from the produce department. Quintero told the paper he liked getting shoppers to try "the exotic fruit stuff they haven't come across before," including jackfruit and rambutan. Avery Mello, the produce team leader, said the closure means losing organic and high-end products "that can't be found elsewhere locally."

Raley's also stopped running a pharmacy in Elko back in 2019, so the closure won't change anyone's prescriptions.

That leaves four categories to replace: organic and natural foods, fresh seafood, gluten-free products, and unusual produce. They don't all end up in the same place.

The Three Supermarkets Still on the Map

Elko will have three full-size supermarkets after December. Two of them are on the same Mountain City Highway corridor as Raley's. Each store's own website lists the departments below.

Store Address Departments relevant to Raley's shoppers
Smith's 1740 Mountain City Highway Natural and Organics, seafood, bakery
Albertsons 2582 Idaho Street Bakery, butcher block with meat and seafood
Walmart Supercenter 2944 Mountain City Highway Grocery, bakery, deli

Smith's is the most direct replacement on paper, because it's the only one of the three that lists a dedicated natural and organics department along with seafood. For anyone who drove to Elko Junction from the north side of town, it's also on the same road. Albertsons, on Idaho Street, covers the seafood counter with its butcher block. Walmart covers the basics and is a short drive up the highway from Raley's.

No store's department list says which brands or how many organic items it carries, or whether it stocks rambutan. The table tells you where to start looking, not what you'll find.

Where the Specialty Shelf Goes Instead

This is where the shopping route moves. Raley's sat beside the interstate. Many of the independent food shops that can cover parts of its selection are in the downtown grid, and each one covers a single category, sometimes in more depth than a supermarket aisle.

  • Natural foods and supplements. Natural Nutrition Health Food Shoppe, at 1900 Idaho Street, Suite 106, carries natural and organic foods, supplements, and vitamins. Its listing with the Elko Daily Free Press gives hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays.
  • Fresh produce, tortillas, and masa. La Norteña, at 524 Front Street, is a Mexican market, bakery, and deli. Its current listing describes house-made tortillas and masa, fresh produce, pan dulce, tres leches cakes, street tacos, and tamales from its snack bar, plus carnitas and birria sold by the pound on weekends.
  • Meat cuts and Mexican groceries. Carnicería Los Compadres Meat Market, at 485 S. 5th Street, Suite D, lists daily hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and describes itself as a source for meat cuts, fresh produce, and Mexican groceries.
  • Baked goods with a local history. B.J. Bull Bakery, at 208 Idaho Street, now has new owners and still makes Cornish pasties. Fillings include beef and cabbage, chicken and rice, bacon and egg, chorizo and jalapeño, and fruit, and the bakery also serves soups.
  • Prepared Basque food. Ogi Deli, at 460 Commercial Street, is a deli and restaurant, not a grocery. It's a good stop for Basque and American sandwiches, salads, and pintxos when the evening plan is to buy dinner rather than cook it.

La Norteña and Los Compadres are confirmed through current business listings, not recent news coverage. Hours and stock at small markets can change, so it's worth calling before you build a weekly trip around either one.

All of these addresses are within a few blocks of Idaho Street, Front Street, and Commercial Street. A Saturday morning that used to mean one cart at Elko Junction could turn into a loop through downtown, with Smith's or Albertsons at the end for everything else.

What We Could Not Find Anywhere in Town

Some of Raley's selection may simply be gone. We couldn't confirm an Asian grocery or a warehouse club operating in Elko, so we haven't listed one. We also found no other local store that says it carries the tropical fruit Quintero described. That doesn't prove nobody stocks jackfruit. It means no retailer in town advertises it.

Gluten-free shoppers have the least information to go on. Smith's natural and organics department and Natural Nutrition are the most likely places to check, but neither one's listing names gluten-free as a category. Expect to read a lot of labels during the first few trips after December.

Summer Fills Some of the Gap, Just Not Before December

Local farms help with produce, but only during the growing season. The Elko Farmers Market sets up behind the Elko Area Chamber of Commerce at 1405 Idaho Street on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. The 2026 state market schedule lists its season as June through September. According to ElkoGrown, vendors there sell local produce, beef and bison, jerky, eggs, fruit, baked goods, and preserves. One of ElkoGrown's own pages says area markets run into October, so check its page before heading out this month.

Lotspeich Family Farm ran its 2026 CSA from May 12 through Sept. 29. Its website lists 2027 dates as TBD. Anyone who wants a weekly farm share next year can watch for those dates this winter, before spring sign-ups.

For produce, then, the strongest local option and Raley's last day are about half a year apart. The months from December through May will lean most heavily on the three supermarkets.

The Space at Elko Junction Is Still an Open Question

The closure is scheduled, but local efforts are still underway. Raley's workers held a petition drive outside the store, and the Free Press reported more than 700 signatures on Aug. 17, with plans to deliver them to the company's corporate office. The paper hasn't reported a company response or any change to the date.

Timing also matters. Chelsea Carbahal of Raley's told the paper that the Elko lease runs 10 years and "expires at the end of this year," which she called relevant context for the decision.

What comes next for the building is the detail that will shape Elko's grocery map after Raley's leaves. A representative of Elko Junction told the Elko Daily Free Press the property was getting close to announcing the next tenants for the space, but gave no details. Until a name is announced, the downtown stops and the three remaining supermarkets are the full list.

Where you buy groceries is part of what daily life in a neighborhood feels like, and it changes over time like everything else.
